October 1, 2003, "Assessing brain injury
damage can be difficult"
It can be very difficult to immediately
evaluate and determine the amount of damage suffered
in a brain injury. Every year, nearly 2 million
Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury, resulting
in 52,000 deaths. The impact brain injuries can
have varies from mild to deadly but can be tough
to ascertain the level of damage. For more information

June 25, 2003, "Little known about the brain
still"
The brain is so complex that even experts are
sometimes unable to determine what type of effect
a brain injury can have on the individual. Some
brain injury patients will come out of comas after
years with full functioning. In the U.S. alone,
two million traumatic brain injuries are suffered
every year, breaking down to one brain injury
every 15 seconds. A little over half of all traumatic
brain injuries are attributed to car accidents,
with falls, assault, and sports following.
What
most people do not fully understand after suffering
a brain injury is the care required for the victim
and for the family. Depending on the severity
of the brain injury, the care required can vary
from minor adjustments to full time care. Some
brain injury patients do not realize the damage
that has been sustained from an accident that
is not a direct blow.
The
costs associated with brain injury can often include
psychosocial therapy, acute care, physical, occupational,
and outpatient therapies that a brain injury lawyer
can help recover. While advances in brain injury
treatments are continuously being made, there
is still so much more to learn about the brain.
There are also delays in brain injury symptoms
so patients suffering a brain injury may initially
think they are okay and fail to receive adequate
treatment.

16, 2003, "Genes and brain injury seizures"
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center
at Dallas believe inheriting a particular gene
involved in lipid metabolism in the brain may
increase the risk of developing seizures following
a traumatic brain injury. A common complication
suffered after a traumatic brain injury is post-traumatic
epilepsy. Brain injury researchers are hoping
that by manipulating aspects of lipid or lipoprotein
metabolism in the brain this can be prevented.

May
2003, "Traumatic brain injury research performed"
According to the National Center for Injury Prevention
and Control, an estimated 1.5 million cases of
traumatic brain injury occurs in the U.S. every
year. This number far exceeds what most people
even know about traumatic brain injury. Statistics
show that Americans need to become more educated
about the incidence of traumatic brain injury,
as around 50,000 Americans die every year because
of a traumatic brain injury. There are 80,000-90,000
Americans that are left to suffer long-term or
permanent disability because of traumatic brain
injury.
Many
problems can result from suffering a traumatic
brain injury depending on what area of the brain
sustained the damage. Cognitive, physical, and
behavioral changes are often incurred because
of a traumatic brain injury that cannot always
be treated. Some traumatic brain injury victims
will find that they must re-learn how to do things
they have been doing practically their entire
lives.
Often,
a secondary brain injury can be suffered after
a traumatic brain injury that doctors have no
way of stopping as of yet. There is research performed
on traumatic brain injury and researchers and
doctors hope to learn more information about traumatic
brain injury and how to better treat the injury
to minimize its’ effects. Contact us to

May 22, 2003, "Bicycles and head
and brain injury still high risk"
The use of bicycle helmets has greatly increased
in the last decade, but despite this safety precaution
head injuries have still increased. The Consumer
Product Safety Commission reports that head injuries
have increased 51% in the last decade, so safety
experts are continuing to make recommendations
on safer bicycle riding.
The
higher incidence of suffering head and brain injury
may be partially attributed to more aggressive
bicycle riding due to increased popularity of
mountain biking. In addition, wearing a bicycle
helmet may allow more riders to become riskier
because of the sense of protection it provides
them with.
According
to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, experienced
riders will crash ever 4,500 miles on average.
Seventy five percent of the 800 deaths that occur
every year because of bicycle crashes will result
in head injuries. There are over 550,000 riders
that will visit the emergency room every year
with one in eight injuries being a brain injury.
Two of every three of the fatalities are because
of brain injury.
Wearing
a well-fitted helmet will reduce the likelihood
of suffering a serious brain injury, but riders
of all levels should still take safety measures.

May 19, 2003, "Traumatic brain injury more
common than realized"
One of the most common neurological conditions
someone can have is a brain injury that can result
in drastic behavioral changes. Depending on the
area of the brain the traumatic brain injury occurs
at can affect what type of damage is suffered.
Traumatic brain injuries occur for a wide range
of reasons on a scale much larger than most people
ever realize.
Taking
as many precautions as possible to reduce risk
of suffering a traumatic brain injury can help
needless suffering and pain. Serious traumatic
brain injury victims often feel they have lost
part of themselves and must sometimes relearn
how to do things that once came second nature
to them. Contact us to confer with a traumatic

October
5, 2001, Protecting the Brain Currently,
there is no effective drug for the treatment of
traumatic brain injury. In the U.S., there are
nearly 52,000 deaths and roughly 80,000 cases
of severe disability related to traumatic brain
injury every year. There are more than 5.3 million
people in the U.S. living with disabilities related
to traumatic brain injury numbers far greater
than those for multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's
disease and Alzheimer's disease. "Brain injury
is not a one-shot deal. The primary injury occurs
from the initial hit. Neurochemical injuries can
cause secondary damage," said Dr. Ken Strauss
of Temple University. The secondary effects of
brain injuries, such as swelling and the release
of toxic chemicals, can be more damaging than
the initial blow, said Dr. Esther Shohami, lead
author of the study. Read More

7, 2000, Traumatic brain injury strikes
every 15 seconds According to the
Brain Injury Association, someone in the United
States sustains a traumatic brain injury every
15 seconds. Vehicle crashes, falls and sports
injuries are the three leading causes. These injuries
can leave victims with temporary or permanent
cognitive and emotional problems, including memory
loss, speech impairments, fatigue and impulsive

brain injury
An estimated 5.3 million Americans, a little more
than 2 percent of the U.S. population, currently
live with disabilities from traumatic brain injuries,
according to a new report by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Each year, approximately
80,000 Americans experience the onset of disabilities
resulting from brain injuries, the report says.
The data released in the CDC study is considered
the most complete picture of the impact of traumatic
brain injuries (TBIs) in the United States. http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/

September
7, 1999, Brain injuries common in amateur
athletes "Traumatic brain
injury is a public-health epidemic," said
Kelly, who pointed out that about 300,000 people
who participate in amateur sports, including high-school
and college athletes, will suffer from traumatic
brain injuries this year. The exact number among
young athletes is unknown. Overall, 1 million
people will suffer traumatic brain injuries this
year, leading to more than 50,000 deaths and 70,000
to 90,000 cases of long-term disability, according
to the editorial. The number exceeds the newly
diagnosed cases of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's
disease and Alzheimer's disease combined. http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/
