“Children with Brain Injury May Experience Altered Personality”

New research shows that children who sustain even mild head injuries are at risk of long-term complications, including personality changes, emotional, behavioral and learning problems. Researchers in England studied more than 500 children ages five to 15 for six years after they sustained their injury. Results showed that roughly 40 percent of the children with a mild head injury experienced behavior or learning disorders severe enough to be considered a “moderate disability.” Roughly 30 percent of all parents felt that their child's personality had been altered due to their injury.
Doctors believe the long-term effects of brain injury on children are often so great because of the lack of follow-up care they receive. While all the children were treated in a hospital at the time of their injury, only 30 percent went to a follow-up appointment. For
