“Navy Hospital Site of Traumatic Brain Injury Study”
June 7, 2004
A 30-year post-injury follow-up study will be performed on Vietnam veterans to assess the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury sustained in combat. The study, which will take place at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, focuses on the effects of head injury on general cognition, memory, and long-term neurological, psychological and social functioning.
One of the longest-running studies on traumatic brain injuries, the Vietnam Head Injury Study (VHIS) began with Phase I in 1974. It included more than 1,000 participants, all of whom were healthy and employed prior to the wartime injury. The newest phase of the study, Phase III, will be conducted over the next three years. It aims to study the effects of head injury on an aging population.
